Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook

Gary Vaynerchuk wrote Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook to answer a question he kept seeing in boardrooms and startup pitches: why is our social media not working? The answer, almost universally, was that brands were throwing right hooks — buy this, sign up, click here — without first throwing jabs: the value-giving, relationship-building, audience-first content that earns the right to ask.

The boxing metaphor is exact. A right hook thrown without setup hits air. The same pitch, preceded by a combination of well-placed jabs, lands differently. The sequence matters. And the jabs only work if they respect the platform — native to the language, aesthetics, and psychology of the specific social environment where they appear. As Vaynerchuk puts it: "Content is king, but context is God."

This skill encodes the jab/right hook ratio analysis, the six characteristics of great content, and platform-specific native content principles — everything needed to diagnose why social media content is underperforming and prescribe the specific changes that will fix it.

Core Framework

DimensionKey Insight
Jab/Right Hook Ratio3-4 jabs before every right hook; asking before relationship equity is built guarantees failure
Native ContentEvery platform has its own language; cross-platform copy-paste is the most common content mistake
Six Content CharacteristicsNative, non-interruptive, low-ask, micro, emotionally resonant, brand-consistent
365-Day StorytellingNo discrete campaigns — only daily content that builds relationship continuously
Real-Time ResponsivenessSocial media's greatest advantage is immediacy; monitor and respond in real time

It does not provide paid advertising strategy, audience targeting guidance, or account growth tactics. For paid social strategy, use platform-specific ad tools alongside this skill.
